Landed cost & margin calculator: is this product worth importing?

Pick your market and sales channel, add the factory price — the calculator returns landed cost per unit, Amazon or retail fees, net margin and a break-even price. So you can decide before you place the order.

1 · Market and channel

2 · Product and HS code

Suggestions are HS6 only. Duty depends on the 8–10 digit national code and any trade measures.

We do not auto-fill duty rates. The same product name can map to different 8–10 digit codes, and US Section 301 / 232 duties change with trade policy. Check your national tariff, then enter the rate — we confirm it again in every quote.

The model

How the margin is calculated

Landed cost first, then the fees your channel takes. The verdict compares the result with your target margin.

ChannelFees deducted from the selling priceWhat the verdict means
Amazon FBAReferral fee, FBA fulfilment, advertising (TACoS), returns, storageMargin ≥ target: profitable. 10–20%: thin. Below 10%: usually not worth the cash cycle.
DTC / ShopifyPayment processing, ad spend per order, outbound shipping, returnsAd cost is the variable that usually decides viability.
Offline retailRetailer allowances, markdown supportCompare wholesale price with landed cost; retail margin belongs to the store.

US importers also pay Merchandise Processing Fee (0.3464%, min/max applies) and, for ocean freight, Harbor Maintenance Fee (0.125%). Both are included when the destination is the US.

Freight reference

Ningbo → Los Angeles: what the market is charging

Indicative market ranges, last checked 30 October 2026. Freight moves weekly — use these to sanity-check a quote, not to replace one.

ModeMarket rangeWhat it covers
LCL$60–120 per CBMPort-to-port, minimum 1 CBM. Add origin and destination charges if quoted separately.
FCL 20GP$4,800–6,400 per containerPort-to-port, Ningbo–Los Angeles / Long Beach.
FCL 40HQ$6,900–8,000 per containerPort-to-port. Drewry WCI Shanghai–LA was $7,514 per FEU on 29 Oct 2026.
DDP sea$1.28–2.30 per kgDoor-to-door, duty and VAT included; rate depends on weight break and destination ZIP.

Sources: Drewry World Container Index (29 Oct 2026, $7,514/FEU Shanghai–LA), forwarder LCL sheets at $60–120/CBM (Oct 2026), and an all-in $137.22/CBM reference from Sino Shipping (17 Oct 2026). Your rate depends on commodity, weight, season and contract terms.

HS codes

What we can suggest — and what only a customs classification can confirm

A product name can point you to a 6-digit HS heading: ceramic mugs to 6912.00, power banks to 8507.60, wooden furniture to 9403.60. That is useful for orientation.

It cannot reliably produce the 8–10 digit national code that sets the actual rate. The same “bag” can be 4202.21 (leather) or 4202.92 (textile), with materially different duty. The same “toy” can be 9503 (toys) or 4016 (rubber articles). National codes also change, and the US adds Section 301 duties on top of MFN rates for many Chinese goods.

So this tool suggests the HS6 heading and sends you to the official tariff. The duty field stays editable, and every Milebond quote confirms the classification in writing before you order.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before pricing

Is this an Amazon FBA fee calculator?

It models the Amazon costs that decide margin — referral fee, fulfilment, advertising, returns and storage — using the rates you enter. Amazon's actual fees depend on category, size tier and weight, so check Seller Central for your exact SKU.

Can it classify my product automatically?

It suggests the 6-digit HS heading from a product name. It does not assign the national 8–10 digit code, because that depends on material, construction and end use, and it carries legal responsibility. We confirm the classification in every quote.

Is duty charged on FOB or CIF?

In most markets duty is charged on CIF: goods plus international freight plus insurance. Expensive freight therefore increases duty, which is why a low unit price can still produce a high landed cost.

Do I pay VAT if I am not registered?

Yes. VAT or GST is collected at import whether or not you are registered. Registration only determines whether you can recover it later.

What counts as a good margin?

For Amazon or DTC, 20%+ net is healthy, 10–20% leaves little room for price wars and returns, below 10% rarely survives advertising and cash-flow costs. Offline wholesale depends on volume and payment terms.

Can you confirm the numbers before I order?

Yes. Send the product, quantity and destination and we return an itemized quote with goods, freight, duty, our fee and the landed cost per unit — within 24 hours.
