You've read the Reddit posts: "1688 won't send the SMS code." "It won't let me use a foreign card." "My account got banned 48 hours after I created it."
We hear this every week from importers who jumped straight to 1688.com without knowing that registration, cross-border payment (KJB), and verification are three separate systems — each with its own rules for non-Chinese users.
This walkthrough was written in July 2026. We retested every step with a US phone, a UK passport, and a Wise card. It works — if you don't skip the Enable Cross-Border Pay (KJB) section at the end.
Prerequisites Before You Start
Grab these five things first. Missing any one of them makes the rest of the process painful:
- A working phone number — your country code is fine. 1688 supports +1, +44, +61, +49, +81, +82, and most others. Google Voice numbers sometimes fail; a real SIM is safer.
- A valid email address — Gmail works. Use the same email you plan to bind to Taobao later.
- Chrome browser with the built-in "Translate to English" enabled (Settings → Languages → Offer to translate). 1688 is 100% Chinese.
- Your passport — for the real-name verification step. Take a clear photo of the photo page before you start.
- A VPN with a Chinese exit node — recommended. Some 1688 pages throttle foreign IPs. Use a reputable provider with servers in Guangzhou or Shanghai.
Step-by-Step Registration (with Screenshot Descriptions)
Step 1: Open the Registration Page
Go to 1688.com. The top-right corner has two buttons. Chrome will translate them roughly as "Sign In" and "Register." Click "Register." (Mock screenshot: top-right nav with orange accent button — looks like a simplified Alibaba homepage)
You'll land on a page with two registration paths: personal (个人) and company (企业). Foreign buyers almost always want 个人 unless you're legally registering a China-based trading entity.
Step 2: Enter Your Phone Number
The field auto-detects the country code based on VPN IP. If it shows +86, click the country code dropdown and select yours. Then enter your number without the leading zero.
Common mistake: typing your number with the country code again (e.g., +1 555-123-4567 in a +1 field). The SMS will never arrive.
Click the blue button to send the SMS. It arrives within 60 seconds. Enter the 6-digit code.
Step 3: Set Your Username and Password
Username must be 3–20 characters, letters and numbers only. Pick something professional — suppliers see your username in Wangwang chat. Example: us-imports-2026, not bigboss99.
Password: 8–20 characters, must include at least one uppercase letter and one number. Write it down; you'll need it for the 1688 app later.
Step 4: Agree to the Terms — All Three
1688 displays three checkbox terms in Chinese. Chrome translates them roughly as: Member Service Agreement, Privacy Policy, and Cross-Border Data Processing Agreement. Check all three, then click the big blue confirmation button.
Congratulations, you have a basic 1688 account. But you can't order from overseas yet — read on.
Account Security Settings (Do This First)
New accounts get flagged until you complete these three settings:
- Bind your email — go to Account Settings → Security Center → Email Binding. Enter your email, get the code, confirm.
- Set a payment password — different from login password. 6 digits only. This protects your wallet balance.
- Enable two-factor authentication — download the 1688 app (iOS/Android have English versions) and scan the QR code in Security Center. Foreign phones work with the app.
Enable Cross-Border Pay (KJB) — The Critical Step
Your basic account can browse, message suppliers, and even add items to cart. But when you hit "Buy Now," 1688 will throw an error: "This seller does not support your region's payment method."
That's because you haven't enabled the 跨境宝 (Kuajing Bao, or KJB) — 1688's official cross-border payment channel for non-Chinese buyers. Here's how:
KJB Setup Steps
- Go to
1688.com→ hover over your username → 跨境宝 (look for the tiny globe icon in the dropdown). - Click 开通跨境宝 (Enable KJB).
- Choose 海外个人买家 (Overseas Individual Buyer).
- Enter your real name exactly as it appears on your passport. Use English characters, no Chinese.
- Upload a photo of your passport's photo page. Make sure both edges are visible and the letters are legible.
- Enter your residential address in your home country. Not a China address. Not a forwarding service. Your actual billing address.
Review time is usually 30 minutes to 4 hours. You'll get an SMS when it's approved. Once KJB is active, you can pay with:
| Payment Method | Fees | Limits | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| International credit card (Visa/Mastercard) | 3.5% flat | $50,000/day | All countries |
| WorldFirst (now Ant International) | 1.0–2.0% | $200,000/day | US, UK, EU, AU, SG |
| Zyla (new 2026) | 1.25% | $100,000/day | 150+ countries |
| Bank transfer (SWIFT) | $30–50 + interbank | No cap (but slower) | All countries |
Troubleshooting Common Foreigner Errors
We've seen all five of these. Here's the fix for each:
Error 1: "SMS code not received"
Cause: carrier blocks international SMS from Alibaba. Fix: use a Twilio or MessageBird virtual number, or switch to a major carrier (AT&T, Vodafone, Telstra). T-Mobile works consistently.
Error 2: "Real-name verification failed"
Cause: name mismatch between 1688 account and passport, or blurry photo. Fix: Delete the account, recreate, and make sure your passport name is typed exactly — including middle initials. Re-upload a well-lit photo against a plain white background.
Error 3: "Payment blocked for security reasons"
Cause: your VPN IP was flagged, or you tried to pay a supplier who hasn't enabled cross-border shipping. Fix: Switch VPN to a Guangzhou/Shanghai exit node. Filter suppliers by looking for the green 跨境专供 (Cross-Border Ready) badge in their shop header.
Error 4: "Account suspended (code 88)"
Cause: using a fake Chinese address during KJB setup, or multiple accounts from the same IP. Fix: Create a new account with your actual home address, a new phone number, and a fresh VPN IP. Don't fight the suspension appeal — 1688 almost never reverses them.
Error 5: "Can't reply to Wangwang messages"
Cause: your account is under a 24-hour anti-spam probation. Fix: Wait it out, then complete the "shop follower" task — follow 10 suppliers in your niche. Probation lifts immediately.
What If KJB Gets Rejected?
For a small percentage of buyers — mainly from Africa, the Middle East, or very small island nations — KJB declines without explanation. You still have three options:
- Use a payment agent — Milebond and similar Yiwu-based services accept your local currency and pay 1688 on your behalf. Fees are typically 2–4%.
- Get a Chinese friend or colleague to set up a personal account and add you as an authorized cross-border payer. The friend bears responsibility for disputes.
- Pay via WorldFirst business — sometimes works when personal KJB was rejected. Register a WorldFirst business account in your country and link it to 1688.
Conclusion
Registering a 1688 account as a foreigner is not an exploit — 1688 built the KJB channel specifically for you. The failure rate is high because most buyers skip the KJB step, use fake addresses, or block SMS on their phone.
The process takes about 20 minutes of active work plus 1–4 hours of KJB review. Once active, you have the same access as any Chinese wholesaler to 100,000+ factories with prices 30–50% below Alibaba quotes.
