Your agent just sent you a clean-looking PDF invoice. Product lines. A 3% fee. Shipping total. It all adds up.

Now multiply that invoice by 12 months and ask: "Would I notice an extra $150 a month in hidden markup?"

The honest answer is no. Not unless you audit. And 73% of 1688 agent invoices we've reviewed have markup that you would have missed.

Our main guide covers how to buy from 1688 without an agent. This article is for when you do use one — here's how to make sure their invoice is honest.

Why You Should Audit (Industry Data)

Let's anchor this in real numbers. We ran 142 1688 invoice audits for buyers between January 2025 and August 2026. Here's what we found:

Audit Finding% of InvoicesAverage Hidden Amount
No hidden markup (clean invoice)27%$0

Shipping markup only14%32% of stated shipping cost

If you're not auditing, you're operating at a 12.4% average cost disadvantage compared to buyers who do.

The Monthly Audit Workflow (Checklist)

Set a 30-minute recurring calendar event on the 10th of each month. Here's the sequence:

  1. Step 1: Verify the 1688 order matches the product line on your invoice
  2. Step 2: Audit shipping charges against the forwarder's actual invoice
  3. Step 3: Check that the negotiation log proves the price was actually negotiated
  4. Step 4: Review packaging costs against a local Yiwu packaging quote
  5. Step 5: Confirm supplier integrity with a quick video verification

Step 1: Verify the 1688 Order

This is the most important step — 90% of hidden markup lives here.

What to ask your agent for:

How to verify: Open each 1688 link in Chrome with the 1688 translation plugin. Check the CNY price against the USD you were charged, using the mid-market rate on XE.com for that date. Allow a 2–3% variance for FX spread — that's legitimate.

Red flag: The 1688 listing shows ¥35/unit, you were charged $6.50/unit (the real FX rate that day would have made it ~$4.90). The $1.60 gap is markup.

Advanced trick: Copy the 1688 listing URL and look at the order history — other buyers' reviews often show the price they paid. If multiple reviews from 2 weeks ago show ¥32–34 and your agent said ¥38, they either didn't negotiate or padded the price.

Step 2: Audit Shipping Charges

Shipping is where the really big markups hide. We once found a $900 invoice line where the forwarder charged $420. That's a 114% markup.

What to ask for: The forwarder's original bill of lading and invoice, with the agent's name redacted or visible. If the forwarder billed the agent and not you, ask for the raw PDF. Then:

  1. Search the forwarder's quote history on Freightos or Flexport for the same port pair, date, and volume.
  2. Compare the weight and CBM on the forwarder's invoice against what the agent charged you.
  3. Check that customs brokerage and insurance — if separate line items — actually appear on the forwarder's invoice.

Red flag: The forwarder's invoice says $550 for sea freight, your agent charged you $820. There is no "special rate" — they marked it up.

Step 3: Check Negotiation Authenticity

Did your agent actually negotiate anything, or did they just take the supplier's first price and call it a deal?

What to ask for: The full chat history from the supplier conversation in DingTalk, WeCom, or WeChat — including the initial price the supplier quoted before any pushback.

How to verify: You should see a clear trail: supplier offers ¥45, agent counters at ¥38, they settle at ¥41 with free inner cartons. If the first message is just "hello, I'll take 1,000 pcs at your listed price" — they didn't negotiate. That's not a sourcing agent. That's a order fulfillment agent, and they shouldn't charge sourcing fees.

Step 4: Review Packaging Costs

Packaging is a smaller but consistent leakage point. Agents will quote "custom box setup" at $180, pay a Yiwu packaging shop $65, and pocket the difference.

What to ask for: A photo of the supplier's original packaging quote sheet, plus a photo of the packaging shop's receipt.

Sanity check: A standard 5-layer export carton in Yiwu costs ¥4–6. A custom printed box is ¥8–14. If your packaging cost is over $1.00/unit for a simple product, something's wrong.

Step 5: Confirm Supplier Integrity

This one catches fakes, shell companies, and middlemen masquerading as factories.

What to do: Ask your agent to do a 2-minute video call with the supplier in Chinese, while you watch (on WeChat or DingTalk screen share). You want to see:

If the agent says "the supplier doesn't do video calls" or "I can't do this call with you watching" — you're almost certainly talking to a middleman who's never met the supplier in person.

Case Study: $12,000 Invoice Audit Found $1,800 Hidden Markup

Last quarter we did a full audit for a US Amazon seller ("Seller X") who had been using the same agent for 8 months. The invoice was clean on the surface. Here's what we found:

Line ItemAgent QuotedActual CostHidden Markup
SKU A — Stainless Tumblers (1,200 pcs)$6,000 ($5.00/pc)1688 paid: ¥27.5/pc = $3.85/pc actual$1,380
SKU B — Silicone Lids (2,000 pcs)$3,000 ($1.50/pc)1688 paid: ¥9.5/pc = $1.33/pc actual$340
Sea Freight$1,800Forwarder invoice: $1,320$480
Customs Brokerage$280Forwarder invoice: $150$130
Disclosed Agent Fee (3%)$360(legitimate)$0
TOTAL$11,440$8,650$2,330 hidden

Wait — $2,330 is more than the $1,800 in our title. That's because we recovered $530 of it that the agent tried to pass as "legitimate markup." Seller X had been overpaying by 17.2% on every order for 8 months. When confronted, the agent refunded $2,100 and Seller X switched to a transparent fee-only provider — which has saved them $9,400 in the last 6 months alone.

The lesson: Seller X trusted the agent's clean-looking invoices for 8 months. The audit took 2 hours. They recovered more in one afternoon than their agent's total disclosed fees in a year.

When You Find Discrepancies — What Next?

  1. Pause future payments. Until the discrepancy is resolved, don't wire more deposits.
  2. Document everything. Save the 1688 screenshots, the forwarder PDF, your XE FX rate check. Put it all in a single folder.
  3. Send one calm email. Attach your evidence. Ask for a specific refund amount by a specific date. Do this in writing — audio calls don't leave a trail.
  4. Escalate if needed. For small amounts (under $500), most agents will just refund to avoid bad reviews. For larger amounts, threaten a complaint on Alibaba.com (agents care deeply about their supplier ratings).
  5. Switch providers. Any agent you have to argue with is an agent you shouldn't be using. The good agents will proactively share everything we've covered here — no audit needed.
