Let's cut to it.
If you're choosing between the Canton Fair in Guangzhou and the Yiwu market 700 km east, you've read ten posts telling you one is "the real factory floor" and the other is a "tourist trap." Most are written by people who work for one side.
We're based in Yiwu. We also walk buyers through Canton Fair every October. Here's the version we'd give a friend.
The 30-Second Decision Table
| Canton Fair | Yiwu Market | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Premium electronics, engineered products, large OEM orders | Everyday consumer goods, small MOQ, mixed containers, bundles |
| Typical MOQ | Wood/textile ~500; stainless/electronics 1,000+ | 1 carton; samples for returning buyers |
| Price vs. same product | Booth price — 15–35% higher | Market price — what traders ship at today |
| Payment (new client) | 30% deposit, balance before shipment | Same at first; Net 15–45 days after a few orders |
| Supplier choice per product | 30–50 qualified exhibitors | 20+ stalls within 5 minutes' walk |
| Time to see all categories | 3 phases × 5 days = 15+ days | 3–5 days, all five districts |
| English & sales | Strong export sales teams | Stall owners are factory wives — direct, often blunt |
| Open | Twice a year, 2 weeks each | Year-round |
The rule: average unit price under ~$50 and everyday goods? Yiwu wins on price and flexibility. High-end electronics or precision hardware? Canton Fair may be worth the premium. Smart buyers do both.
1. Price and MOQ: You're Paying for the Booth
A Canton Fair shell booth costs tens of thousands of RMB for two weeks. Two company types can afford that:
- Large trading houses that don't make the product — they source it (often from Yiwu) and layer 15–30% on top. You're paying for the fluent English sales rep.
- Factories at scale — whose MOQ reflects it: wood and textile around 500 pcs, stainless and electronics 1,000+.
Yiwu stall rent is a fraction of that. Many stalls are the first-tier wholesaler or the workshop's own window. MOQ is whatever the carton pack allows.
2. Customization: A Bundle in 24 Hours
At Canton Fair, ask for custom printing, private packaging, or a 3-item gift bundle and you'll hear "we'll check with production" — meaning 1,000+ customized pieces, 30-day lead time, sample charge.
In Yiwu, the entire supply ecosystem is 30 minutes away. Need custom printed boxes? The packaging stall is in the same building. A supplier can assemble a sample bundle and send you photos or video the same day, often within 24 hours. You test a private-label bundle before committing to a container.
3. Payment Terms: Cash Flow Is a Hidden Margin
Canton Fair on day one: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment. You carry the full outlay.
Yiwu is relationship-based. After two or three smooth transactions, most suppliers move to Net 15, Net 30, or even Net 45 — you pay after the goods arrive, or after they sell. For a small brand, that 30–45 days of float on every order changes what you can afford to stock.
4. Supplier Density: 20 Quotes in 5 Minutes
A Canton Fair product hall has maybe 30–50 exhibitors in your niche — the ones who could afford the booth. In Yiwu, pick any simple consumer product and within five minutes' walk you'll find 20+ stalls selling the same item, with slight differences in thickness, finish, and cap.
That density is negotiating power. In Guangzhou you compare 5 quotes. In Yiwu, a supplier drops their price in real time when they see you're walking to the next stall.
Every supplier we recommend passes our 5-dimension, 100-point scorecard — Cost Competitiveness (35), Delivery Performance (30), Quality (25), NPD (5), Service (5) — before we introduce them. The stall with the lowest price doesn't automatically win; the one with the lowest total cost does.
5. Logistics: The Free-Delivery Advantage
Canton Fair suppliers are scattered across five provinces. Buy from five of them, and you pay for five separate trucking legs before the container reaches port.
Yiwu is one of the largest small-commodities logistics hubs on earth. Most suppliers quote EXW Yiwu, and many deliver to your consolidation warehouse for free. One container, one booking, lower per-unit freight.
6. Time: 3 Phases vs 5 Days
Canton Fair runs in three phases (~5 days each), different categories per phase. Sourcing across categories means 15+ days or paying a local team to cover the phases you skip.
Yiwu's five districts are connected and open the same week. A focused buyer covers every relevant category in 3–5 days.
7. The Honest Caveat: Canton Fair Wins on Communication
We won't pretend Yiwu is perfect. Canton Fair sales teams have fluent English, fast email, Incoterms fluency, a decade of FBA labels under their belt.
Yiwu stall owners are often the factory owner's wife — sharp on price, but basic English, blunt, quick to cut off tire-kickers. That's exactly why international buyers use a local agent: to translate, warm the relationship, and keep the Yiwu price advantage without the communication tax.
So Which Do You Choose?
- Yiwu if: average unit price under ~$50; everyday consumer goods; small MOQ; custom bundles; mixed containers; testing a new line.
- Canton Fair if: high-end electronics, precision hardware, engineered products; your order justifies a direct factory relationship.
- Both: discover at Canton Fair, validate the price at Yiwu. Here's how to plan that trip.
Before You Go
Whichever floor you walk, the same traps are waiting. Two things to read next:
- The 5 Yiwu market scams every buyer should know — sample tricks, fake factories, personal-account payment traps.
- How to tell if your sourcing agent is taking a kickback — three red flags that mean your "independent" agent is actually paid by the factory.
